Begin with the prayer below, then go to the prayer for the day.
God of wisdom and mercy, grant us patience to listen; compassion to be open to other views and opinions; generosity to forgive and grace to change. As you taught us to love our dear neighbor, we pray that you give us strength to be healing instruments of unity and reconciliation.
Day 85: Sunday, August 2
Creator, I pray for brothers and sisters on each continent who face continual wildfires. I pray for rapid assistance for fire victims, and for long-term wisdom to make choices and take action that protects our common home.
Day 86: Monday, August 3
Today I pray with gratitude for freedom of speech and the right to vote in the U.S. As we witness voter suppression in Russia, may we protect our ability to speak up and vote, especially as a means to stand with people in need.
Day 87: Tuesday, August 4
God of compassion, accompany each of us when we offer a public witness inviting people to unite in support of our marginalized brothers and sisters. Enable me to be an effective voice for those treated unjustly.
Day 88: Wednesday, August 5
Today I pray for the affordability of necessities like food, shelter, and health care. Prevent the high cost of these essentials from driving people into consumer debt, paying for things over time that are long gone.
Day 89: Thursday, August 6
On this anniversary of detonating an atomic bomb over Hiroshima, may we recognize the horrors of war engineered by people in faraway rooms. May the cost of war and destruction sink in so that we always choose the path of peace.
Day 90: Friday, August 7
Today I pray for brakes and guardrails to contain the runaway train of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. May this remarkable technology be applied to serve humanity and protect our common home.
Day 91: Saturday, August 8
Today I pray that elected leaders can pivot from demeaning rhetoric that creates endlessly escalating attacks on those who don’t agree on a position. May our society reject this behavior and collaborate for unity and the common good.
